Student Blog
Brought to you from your @GoogleStudents friends. From pre-university to PhD (and beyond), we got you.
Personal submarine? Time travel device? Yes.
February 4, 2009
Everyone knows that the life of a college student is all about balancing work and play. With tons of geo-referenced content and video game-like navigation controls, Google Earth enables you to excel at both. In fact, Google Earth 5.0 now gives students the ability to explore beneath the surface of the ocean, go back in time, even travel to Mars -- all from the comfort (or discomfort) of your dorm room.
Let's say you need to do a class presentation about climate change? Why be like everyone else and show a slide deck? Instead, fire up Google Earth and use the new
touring feature
to record a multimedia fly-through of glacier locations or sea temperature animations. And when you're done, make a tour of that road trip you took last summer and share it with your friends.
What about that marine biology research assignment?
Ocean
in Google Earth features piles of content from leading marine experts at National Geographic, NOAA, BBC, Cousteau Society, and dozens more. Just fly to the region you're studying, flip on the Ocean layer, and dive in. If you need a distraction, check out reviews of surfing and diving spots from around the world and strat making plans to get there over Spring Break. Or just zone-out watching videos of manatees, otters, and sharks.
We've also added
historical imagery
to Google Earth, going back to the 1940s in some locations. Remember that climate change project? Use screenshots from Google Earth to illustrate your argument about global warming with images of Lake Chad or Grinnell Glacier. It's always interesting, too, to fly to a familiar location at your university and see how it's changed over time. You might be surprised about how new (or old!) that building in the middle of campus really is.
Finally, if any of your working or playing takes you into outer space, you can always leave our planet to see a 3D view of Mars. Yep, Mars. You can even check out some high-resolution Gigapan images from Mars rovers on the surface of the red planet. It's not quite 'Street View' -- more like 'Martian View'. That oughta take up a few hours.
