It's graduation season, so congratulations to those who've walked down the aisle recently, donning cap and gown! To help you with your transition from college life to "the real world," we're using our
usual Friday series to bring you some Google tips geared towards graduating students. The following is just one in a series of posts we'll be doing every Friday throughout the summer, so
stay tuned for more tips!
If you're a part of the class of '09, you're likely leaving behind a lot of great college memories and taking with you a new alumni email. So we want to remind you of a few Gmail tips that should help you get the most out of this new address.
Set up mail forwarding or fetching
Instead of checking a separate account for emails sent to your alumni address, have all your messages appear in your Gmail inbox. You can either set up mail forwarding from inside your alumni account for all new messages, or use Gmail's Mail Fetcher to have all messages (old and new) automatically downloaded to your Gmail inbox.
Learn more about both options.
Send 'From:' your alumni address
If you still want to show your school pride, you can add a custom 'From:' address to your Gmail account that lets you list your alumni address as the sender for outgoing emails.
Learn to set up a custom 'From' address.

yes, but there's that old annoying "on behalf of" problem. it's been "being worked on" for quite a few months now... i know nothing about programming, but is it that difficult to include smtp server support? =/
I know a fair bit of programming in general, but not so much about SMTP. That said, I'm guessing it's not so much that it's hard to do, but that it's hard to do efficiently. Though I can't see why it'd be any less efficient than POP, especially when most users receive far more than they send.
If you're a college grad and you didn't already know about GMAIL and all of its wonderful tricks, I'd question whether or not your degree was real or not.
Something that has happened to me frequently is that when I'm answering to some mail written by some teacher/student sent to my University address I sometimes reply without looking at my "From:" field.
This means that I reply using the Gmail address, instead of the University address. And that's a bit of a burden. It would be nice to have a Gmail Labs feature to make the "From:" field behave in a smarter way.
That beings said, Gmail is awesome.
Thanks
When I tried using the custom "From:" address for replying, my school's server rejected it, so I'm forced to use my Gmail address form the custom "From:". I've been doing that for half a year now and no one seems to have noticed yet.
To Ferk:
There is an easy way to solve that problem (if I'm understanding you correctly) - If you go to your Gmail settings, and then go to "Accounts and Import," you will see under the "Send Mail As" section that you have the following option:
-Reply from the same address the message was sent to
-Always reply from default address
If you select the first option, it will do just what it says, and that will allow you to not worry about sending from your gmail address when replying to an email sent to your university email address.
Hope that helps!
Well.. can anyone tell me why google did not release an API specification for smtp with java ? Ive been wondering about this.
Amazing how a simple thing like an @msu.edu email address is the difference between getting a reply and getting looked over. It's funny is th
I think too that google should try and combat the "on behalf of" snag. It makes you look unpropessional if not a bit shaddy.
The only gripe with gmail, which I love.
