The Domino Google Challenge comes to China
August 29, 2011
The
Domino Google Challenge
made its mark on Google’s China office this summer, where creative and talented students from around the country threw their hats (or rather, their tiles) in the ring to compete in domino design.
University students registered their teams online, and then submitted their most creative domino designs in PDF, SketchUp or other format. The catch? They all had to have Google as the subject. More than 600 students from dozens of universities all over China participated, submitting 40 proposals in the first round. The review committee, which consisted of five Googlers as well as domino professionals from a local domino club, reviewed all the designs and selected five teams to enter the second round, a domino video show. The teams from Xi’an, Changsha, Wuhan, Shanghai and Beijing were the clever folks behind

. The videos were posted on the website and the public voting began. Altogether, over 1,100 people visited the site to vote for their favorites and the videos generated more than 3,600 views.
On July 28, the three finalists (Twittttter, Googuys and Idea Garden) were invited to the Google Beijing office to attend a two-day Domino Google Camp. Together, they created a final group design called
“A one-day visit in the Google office”
, as seen in the video above. They also went on a company tour and participated in a roundtable discussion with Googlers about day-to-day life and career development at Google. Throughout the day, Googlers and the finalists mixed and mingled, each equally impressed by the other. The Domino Google Challenge exemplifies some of our most important cultural tenets, like teamwork, innovation and persistence. Congratulations to all the daring domino artists who entered this year’s contest—keep the chips falling!
