Google Goes Back2School Series: Networking...the Professional Kind

When you hear the word “networking”, what do you think of? The social kind? The hardware kind involving fiber-optic cables and signals? Or the really intimidating kind with company representatives and recruiters at career fairs and campus events?
If the latter rings true for you, then read on as we take on professional networking and provide strategies to help you achieve notable networking ninja status! Approaching representatives at career fairs and campus events may be one of the most intimidating things you do in college, but we want to change that reality and make professional networking as effective as the hardware version and as rewarding as the social version.

Mythbusters
Myth #1:
Campus recruiters and representatives speak with so many students at a time - they will never remember me!
Reality:
Not necessarily true. Come prepared with your resume and a unique, interesting fact about yourself. Our Google campus recruiters believe that students stand out when they are humble, inquisitive and passionate.
Myth #2:
I feel like I don’t have anything particularly unique or interesting to discuss.
Reality:
Come prepared with questions about our opportunities and company culture and let us know why you're interested in Google! Look up internships, programs our development opportunities you think are interesting before you meet with anyone.
Myth #3:
Networking is only effective in person.
Reality:
Definitely not! While campus recruiters do like to engage 1-on-1 and encourage you to introduce yourself when you have the chance, there are many other ways to stay connected. Keep in touch via email, ask to have a Hangout and/or meet on-campus.
Get started - attend career events on campus, join campus organizations and start making some lasting connections!
